The heating of liquid cargo is a highly important matter as it regards the transport of high viscous fluids (crude oil, fuell oil, virgin naphta, molasses, etc.). For any type of crude oil there exists a minimal temperature that must be maintained during the transport, because under it there arise dangerous phenomena of settling. Moreover, normally a still higher temperature must be reached in order to obtain the necessary fluidity of the transported liquid needed during the pumping and discharging operations.

The heating system must assure adeguate mechanical resistance to the vibrations and to the stress transmitted by the hull to the heating coils. Moreover, it must guarantee resistance to the corrosion provoked by the cargo and the sea-water used for the washing and ballasting operations. Finally the system must be light and simple to be installed.

Normally the heating of the liquid cargo of the tanks can be realized with coils or with prefabricated elements. The latter allow a reduction of the cost of the on-board installation of 30-35%. Our systems are always realized with extended surface elements: in fact, the finning permits to obtain the following advantages:

• no problems of space for the coils at the bottom of the tank and therefore easy cleaning by automatic washing systems
• reduction of the overall weight in comparison with other systems and therefore less dead weight in case of cargo with small specific weight
• massive convective motion for the heat transfer due to the concentration of the heating surface in comparison with bare tube systems, therefore less time is needed for the same conditions of efficiency with energy saving as a consequence. The finned elements can be realized in the following materials:
